Ground Turkey Tacos

I have been trying to make my beloved tacos healthier and made a version of my friend Marjorie’s turkey tacos. Lean ground turkey with a packet a of taco seasoning and more than a couple dashes of hot sauce. Warm the tortillas in the oven…pre-made fairway salsa…lettuce…cheese…done. The most labor intensive part was the guac!


Junk Food Friday

I tried a new diet during the month of October…a 30 day financial diet. One of the toughest rules was to bring my lunch to work every single day. Now that I have saved close to $1000 I decided to loosen the reins a bit and enjoy a really bad but oh so good meal on Fridays.

This Friday, CHIPOTLE!!!

Call it fake Mexican, bad for you, good for you or what have you. I love it. I’m a self proclaimed addict and probably enjoy it more now that it’s a once in a while $9 dollar treat. I usually get a steak bowl with black beans, extra pico de gallo, medium salsa, cheese and lettuce. I can already hear you saying “What about the sour cream?” or “No guac?!” I like to keep it nice and simple friends. The only downside of eating Chipotle for lunch is the inevitable food coma that follows.

Hurricane Sandy has struck here in NYC so I’m cooped up in the house and looking for the scariest Halloween recipes I can find. Got one! When I saw the below photo I literally cringed. Not sure if I’d be able to actually take a bite but they look amazingly sick and fun! Try handing these out to the trick or treaters…

Late Night Eats: Snack Dragon

What do you call a hole in the wall taco shack, open till 4 am, with a streetside window? Snack Dragon!

While it isn’t the best taco you will ever have, SD has a cool vibe, fresh ingredients and it totally hits the spot when you are stumbling around the LES and need to feed that liquor. The menu is simple and straight forward. My favorite is the grilled sole taco.

I also love looking at all of the random tchotchkes while I wait.

Besides the grilled sole I’ve tried the Slayed Dragon (pork), pollo verde and carne asada. Great flavors in all three and the blue corn tortilla has an interesting texture and flavor. The only downside is after one bite the whole thing falls apart…not an ideal situation but at $3 a taco, I’m always back for more.

Food Finds: Moroccan M’Smen

I’m admittedly late to most things, but NEVER late to brunch on the upper west side. Arriving 30 minutes early and strolling through the 79th street Greenmarket is one of my favorite things to do.

Hot Bread Kitchen gave out samples of Moroccan M’Smen, a buttery and flaky flat bread. I tried it the traditional way with a drizzle of honey but thought that it could be just as good in a savory preparation. The wheels started turning and I made a yummy breakfast a few days later.

I got the idea to create an open faced breakfast sandwich with ingredients that I had in the fridge.

Nothing like a Corona to help you cook 😉

This turned out to be a great one pan dish. After cooking the eggs, I warmed and crisped some ham, then put the M’smen in the pan to get warm. Layer your ingredients and go to town!

If you’re on the upper west side try some M’Smen or other great breads. Hot Bread Kitchen preserves baking traditions from around the world and creates opportunity for immigrant women. It doesn’t get any better than cooking and eating while helping a great cause!

Food Revelations

It’s 99 degrees in NYC right now. I got in a 4mile run at the crack of dawn when it was still relatively bearable to be outdoors, but now I am camped out in front of my AC, black cherry seltzer in hand and watching the Food Network. #thisisthelife

But I digress…The fast food workers of Reddit are telling us exactly what to order and what to steer clear of at our favorite grease chains. A lot of the information is not new, but some of it is disturbing. Here’s a quick excerpt from the message board,

“I don’t work there anymore and things are probably different now but when i worked at McDonalds i accidentally left a whole bag of about 100 chicken nuggets out on a counter for way too long.

They melted. Into a pool of liquid. I never understood why. But they were completely indiscernible as being the nuggets i once knew.

Had to make myself a twenty piece just to get over the sight of the nugget pool. Still delicious.”

WOW. Still delicious?! Do they put crack in the nuggets? Does crack melt?? I have too many ridiculous questions but you can read the comments about what’s in the Wendy’s chili, sandwich artists at Subway, and the fries we all love here.
